South African casino in bingo battle

A battle has broken out in a South African province over the issuing of bingo licences within the catchment area of an existing casino.  According to the South African magazine, Gaming for Africa, Emfuleni Resorts, owner of the Boardwalk Casino, is launching a High Court action to set aside a decision by the Eastern Cape Gambling and Betting Board to issue bingo licences within the Boardwalk’s catchment area.

In 2010 the Boardwalk had its casino licence extended to 2025 based upon its commitment to a substantial investment in the complex.  That commitment was based upon gambling exclusivity in its catchment area, which is Port Elizabeth and the surrounding area.

Two years ago the board permitted electronic bingo terminals to operate in the region which, says Boardwalk, impacted its revenues. The company now claims that its exclusivity has been compromised.  Emfuleni Resorts is seeking compensation for lost revenue and after pursuing other avenues with the board, it is now going to the High Court for relief.
