Hong Kong’s Ocean Park faces the difficulties of closure

Ocean Park has been one of the signature attractions in Hong Kong since its opening 43 years ago. Due to the factors of Coronavirus epidemic and anti-extradition protests, the number of tourists has greatly decreased. It is most likely that it will face the fate of bankruptcy and closure in June this year. The government of the Hong Kong Administrative Region planned to allocate TWD 20.9 billion to help Ocean Park repay its loans and allow it to continue its operations. However, 62% of Hong Kong people disagree and think it is a waste of public money. It is understood that at the beginning of the year, the government of the Hong Kong Administrative Region, at the request of the Ocean Park, prepared to allocate HK$10.64 billion to fund a new development plan for the Ocean Park. However, affected by the Coronavirus epidemic, the government of the Hong Kong Administrative Region readjusted the amount of the budget. The chief of Hong Kong Government’s Commerce & Economic Development Bureau Edward Yau Tang-wah said on May 11 that the government of the Hong Kong Administrative Region will adjust and provide a subsidy worth HK$5.425 billion to Hong Kong’s Ocean Park to fund the park’s operation for one year and repay commercial loans and other expenses. The relevant bills were scheduled to be submitted to the Finance Committee of the Legislative Council on May 15 for deliberation, hoping to pass the budget as soon as possible to provide relief. Edward Yau Tang-wah said that regardless of whether the Ocean Park will reopen, if there is no new funding to support it, it is expected to go bankrupt in June. The HK$3 billion previously allocated by government of the Hong Kong Administrative Region to the park will be used to repay commercial loans, delay government repayment and to allow it to continue operating.
